Strategic Rationale
Establishing a dedicated Women's and Children's Hospital at the Port Moresby General Hospital (POMGEN) campus is a critical step forward in addressing the specialised healthcare needs of mothers and children in Papua New Guinea. This modern facility centralises and elevates maternal and paediatric care, providing world-class infrastructure designed specifically for these vulnerable demographics.
The six-level dedicated hospital building introduces hundreds of new specialised beds alongside extensive modern delivery suites, operating theatres, intensive care units (PICU/NICU), and comprehensive outpatient services, substantially expanding the campus's capacity and clinical capabilities.
Facility Infrastructure & Distribution
Emergency & Outpatients
- Ground Level: 2,290m² dedicated to Emergency, featuring Short Stay, Acute, Women's Emergency, and Children's Infectious sections. Co-located with a 315m² Imaging suite and 360m² Lab.
- Level 1: 1,190m² Outpatient clinics and 730m² Academic Education facilities.
Maternity & Delivery
- Delivery Suites: 3,440m² on Level 2, housing 38 contemporary delivery suites and 10 O&G Recovery beds.
- Maternity Wards: 168 Maternity Beds spread across extensive wards on Level 1 (3,370m²) and Level 3 (3,430m²).
Operating & Critical Care
- Operating Theatres: 2,510m² on Level 2 seamlessly integrated near the delivery suites.
- Intensive Care: Level 4 features an 880m² ICU and a 1,620m² PICU/ICU supporting 25 critical beds. Level 5 houses a 2,500m² NICU & SCN provisioned for 35 specialised newborn beds.
Paediatric Wards
- Extensive Inpatient Care: Spanning multiple upper levels (Levels 4, 5, and 6), delivering over 150 dedicated paediatric ward and recovery beds.
- Level 6: 2,500m² dedicated entirely to Paediatric Recovery (60 beds).
