Central Provincial Hospital (Bautama)

A visionary development for the Bautama healthcare precinct, creating a regional hub for medical services and education.

Mission & Vision

The Central Provincial Hospital project aims to establish a Level 5 facility to serve as a referral hub for the province. This development is critical for significantly relieving the secondary and tertiary care pressure on Port Moresby General Hospital.

The hospital will be situated within the Bautama healthcare precinct, acting as a comprehensive medical city that integrates clinical care with professional housing and infrastructure.

Key Project Highlights

Need & Strategic Alignment

  • Addressing Healthcare Gaps: Central Province currently lacks a Level 5 hospital; many residents must travel to Port Moresby for secondary and tertiary care.
  • National Health Plan Compliance: The facility is designed to meet PNG National Health Standards for role delineation Level 5, acting as the "hub" in a hub-and-spoke model for five districts.

Facility Capacity & Services

  • Bed Count: Based on 2026 population projections, the target is 457 beds, including acute care (442 beds) and support services (15 beds).
  • Specialised Services: Beyond standard Level 5 services, the design includes tertiary capabilities such as neurosurgery, cardiac care, and digital subtraction angiography (DSA).
  • Sustainable Infrastructure: The plan incorporates 100% backup diesel power, ground-mounted solar arrays to reduce operational costs, and an on-site sewage treatment plant.

Staffing & Support

  • Staff Housing: To attract and retain the required 20–30 senior medical officers and other clinicians, the master plan includes 200 new residential homes and student lodge-style accommodation.
  • Cultural Sensitivity: Design elements include a haus win (sheltered area for guardians), susu mama facilities, and a chapel to meet local customs and pastoral needs.

Project Phasing

The project is designed to be delivered in strategic phases, ensuring that critical infrastructure is prioritised to meet the immediate healthcare needs of Central Province while building towards the full master plan vision.
